01. What is HP eMail Filter?
HP eMail Filter is a comprehensive, enterprise class email security service for small and medium businesses. The solution blocks spam, viruses and other unwanted email content without requiring the installation or ongoing maintenance of software or hardware. The service is powered by the industry-leading Symantec Brightmail™ and Symantec AntiVirus™ technologies.

02. How does the HP eMail Filter service work?
HP eMail Filter, powered by Symantec™, is a subscription-based hosted service that incorporates Symantec’s spam and virus filtering technologies. The solution delivers effective spam volume reduction and accurate threat protection of business-critical email without requiring on-site hardware or software. Simply direct your email traffic through our data centers where it is cleansed before it reaches their network. HP eMail Filter features a secure, Web-based console allowing customers to manage flexible filtering policies, reports, and all aspects of the solution.

03. Why choose a hosted deployment option? One of several reasons:
  1. To save money. You don’t have to purchase, maintain and capitalize hardware to handle email security.
  2. Reduce IT Burden. No operating systems or software to update and no hardware to maintain..
  3. Reduce load on your existing email infrastructure. Load on servers, bandwidth, firewalls etc is significantly reduced because spam and email with viruses are stopped before they even reach the customer’s network

Providing effective security for the business requires powerful technology, accurate threat intelligence, proven processes, and experienced professionals to bring it all together. But in today’s era of complex network environments and limited resources, it can be difficult and costly to evaluate and deploy security controls capable of keeping up with a continually changing threat landscape. And even then, competitive pressures make it hard to find, train, and retain knowledgeable security personnel. HP eMail Filter is your outsourced partner, relieving you of these burdens.

04. Will HP eMail Filter work with my existing email infrastructure?
Yes, This service is provided at the Internet tier, outside of your network. A hosted service is by definition separate from a software or appliance deployments that they may already have in place. The hosted solution provides another layer of defence external to the customer network. Traffic is scanned before entering your network. This additional layer complements internal protection layers to provide defence in depth.

05. Can I add users mid way when my business grows?
Yes. The service is entirely flexible depending on the number of seats that an SMB requires to suit their needs.

06. How big is the spam problem?
Spam continues to be a pervasive problem that all small to mid-sized businesses must deal with. In 2007, between 60 and 70% of all email is spam. Dealing with spam is a waste of valuable employee time. In addition, spam often contains offensive material, and can possibly expose the recipient to fraud. Spam also has the ability to consume email servers and negatively impact network performance. Today’s spammers are turning to a new form of spam called “image-based spam,” which is not only a means of bypassing anti-spam filters, it also uses a great deal of bandwidth and storage space — commodities that are in short supply in many small and mid-sized businesses, so while spam can be deleted, it does come at significant cost to many businesses.

07. How big is the virus problem?
According to Virus Bulletin, over 100 million virus incidents were reported in 2006 alone. This is a sharp increase over previous years. Viruses and worms put your business at great risk and can cost tremendous amounts of money in real dollars and productivity. Stopping them before they enter you network, using HP eMAIL Filter, provides peace of mind and confidence in today’s risk laden communications environments.

08. How do i get the service activated?
Once your order is placed, you will receive a notification that includes all of the simple instructions for directing your email traffic (a reseller or service provider may be able to do this for you) and accessing the secure, Web-based console. All documentation is included within the administrative console in very details, context sensitive help.

09. What are some of the main features of HP eMail Filter? The key features are:

  • Virus filtering – Featuring Symantec AntiVirus™
  • Content filtering - Subject line, message body filtering & attachment filtering.

  • TLS Support for secure communications

10. Are there protections against directory harvest attacks, and denial of service attacks?
Yes. HP eMail Filter provides built-in protections against these and other attacks such as mail bombs.

11. How much administration is required?
HP eMail Filter is configured with default; best practices policy settings for antispam, antivirus and content filtering. Administrators may not need to change any of the default policy settings that apply to their domain(s). They may want to establish different policies for things like content filtering for various users or domains but overall, minimal administration of policy is required. Administrators will need to view and manage domain level quarantines and statistical reporting but can push much of this task to end users if desired.

12. What kind of reporting tools are available?
